Throughout EDTS 225: Educational Technologies, I have learnt how technology can be used alongside classic classroom tools to facilitate learning, and create engagement in the classroom. My own teaching philosophy is to ensure students have a welcoming and safe environment to be every day. Technology can be used to ensure this is the case as it connects the individual to the world.
Currently, there are hundreds of ways to remain connected and learn about the world through social media. As an educator, social media sites such as Pinterest are incredibly useful (however, pin sparingly otherwise your account will be deactivated as a bot, coming from personal experience). Given the amount of technology available, I can imagine it would be stressful knowing where to incorporate it and how. I would refer to the SAMR model as a guide. This model allows teachers to differentiate how technology is used in the classroom.
Educators can choose to Substitute technology where they see fit, this would be going from paper exit slips to incorporating a google form in your digital learning plan. This could also fall under augmentation, where a teacher can directly substitute a pre-existing tool to make digital learning more streamlined. Tech can also be used to Modify or Redefine tasks and activities in the classroom. Students are very tech savvy nowadays and with this in mind, teachers can create activities that work with technology, rather than against.
Technology is an amazing tool to incorporate into the classroom. However, I believe it should be used alongside pre-existing tools and shouldn’t take over classrooms entirely. Many students, especially those whose formative years started during COVID-19, are addicted to technology. A good chunk of students out there are glued to their screens at home and in school and while some activities may be productive, this limits socialization important for creating healthy adults in the future. There should be a balance within the type of technology used as well. Anything too game heavy can be misconstrued as fun or break time. Yes, it’s engaging but no real learning is occurring.
Tools such as Google Arts and Culture are engaging and educational compared to something like Cool Math Games which has some math, more games. Technology is meant to enhance learning, rather than stifle it. I believe it has the potential to work alongside some students' creativity, allowing them to take full advantage of the tools available across various platforms to facilitate learning, and streamline the learning environment.
